Healthy snacks, weights, and tape measure

USD 475 promotes wellness for students, staff, and our community by sharing how healthy choices will improve the quality of their lives.   The district also strives to demonstrate progress on the Kansas wellness policy standards in nutrition, nutrition promotion and education, physical activity as well as integrated wellness in the USD 475 community.  This includes sharing relevant and timely wellness information with our learning community and collaborating with other agencies to share resources and address mutual wellness goals.  In addition, we implement a variety of wellness activities for staff throughout the school year.  As the district’s wellness coordinator it is my pleasure to work collaboratively with students, parents, colleagues, and patrons to enhance wellness opportunities at school and in our community.

The district also offers District Dish, online news, through connectED where you can find healthy recipes and opportunities to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

A Wellness Success Story

The Fort Riley Middle School’s Annual Wellness Fair is a school-wide event that incorporates collaboration with the surrounding communities of Fort Riley, Junction City, Manhattan, and Chapman. Area health care professionals take time out of their busy schedules to teach our 6th-8th graders about physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, financial, and environmental wellness. Our students get to travel through the fair, interacting with booths and presenters that are stationed in classrooms, gymnasiums, and outdoor areas. The fun-filled day is often started with a guest speaker who shares their wellness journey with the students. Students have the opportunity to learn in a unique way from a variety of hands-on, experiential learning centers. The big “take away” for the day is exposure to different health care careers and recreational opportunities that are available for students. Our guests have the opportunity to network with other adults and get the chance to interact with middle schoolers in a positive way.
