GEARY COUNTY USD 475 is the eleventh largest school district in the State of Kansas serving over 6,300 students in Junction City, Fort Riley, Milford, and Grandview Plaza.  Geary County is located 100 miles west of the Kansas City metropolitan area on I-70 and 20 minutes from Kansas State University. 

 

GEARY COUNTY USD 475 is made up of thirteen elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school.  It provides a comprehensive special education program.  Preschool programs include Head Start, Infant-Toddler and Parents as Teachers.  In addition, there are numerous before and after school programs serving students.

 

GEARY COUNTY USD 475 is a diverse, multicultural, innovative school district with a state and national reputation for continuous school improvement.  Assessment scores on state and national tests have improved steadily since 1986 due to strong teacher, administrator, Board of Education support and community collaboration.

 

GEARY COUNTY USD 475 serves a population of approximately 30,000 residents in the cities of Junction City, Milford, and Grandview Plaza and it provides education services for the dependents of Army personnel serving at Fort Riley, Kansas.  The economy of the city and surrounding area is heavily influenced by the military, small family farms and retail/manufacturing firms.  Excellent cultural and recreational activities are located within the county, at Kansas State University, Milford Lake and the surrounding area.

PROVIDE orientation activities and support for new military students and works cooperatively with military families on student attendance issues surrounding deployment-related “block-leaves” 

 

PLACE transfer students in classes/courses most nearly corresponding to the student’s grade-level or courses of study in their previous school

 

INCORPORATE transfer students into activity programs based upon (1) demonstrated skill through special tryouts, and/or (2) the point in a respective activity or athletic season/schedule at which the student transfers into the school.

JUNCTION CITY HIGH SCHOOL

 

 

IS a Talent Development High School organized into Career Academies for grades 10-12.  Ninth grade students are enrolled in the Freshman Success Academy

IS electronically linked to the military Interactive Counseling Center to accommodate military student transfers.

football, basketball, wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, tennis, golf,  soccer, swimming, track and cross country and provides extra-curricular opportunities in debate, forensics, vocal & instrumental music, and other clubs and organizations.

Ware Elementary received a 2005 National School Change Award sponsored by Fordham University.

 

Junction City High School selected as a 2005 Model High School by the International Center for Leadership in Education.

USD 475 was one of six school districts in the U.S. to receive 2004 Wright Group Excellence in Education Award for successful implementation of the Everyday Math Program

 

Two elementary students selected grand prize winners and 15 other student essays printed in A Tribute to Military Families – Letters of Thanks from our Nation’s Children, published by Sears and the National Military Family Association

 

USD 475 Twenty-First Century Program received a 2004 After school Champion Award from the After school Alliance in recognition of exemplary after school programs.

 

USD 475 received a $2.1 million, 3-year No Child Left Behind Early Reading First Grant to improve language and reading skills of young children.
