IDEAS:

Databases for Teachers

·         Create a student database to store various information obout each of your students.  Use this database as the source of data for mail merges in MS Word.

·         Create a lesson plan database for each course you teach.  Allow entry for lesson objective, activities, assessments, materials, and connection to national, state, and/or local standards.

·         Document comments about your students' progress in your class or on an individual project.  Use this to print extended report cards to send home or for parent conferences.

·         Create a database to store useful web site addresses and descriptions.

·         Keep track of your inventory: books, art supplies, videos, chemicals, etc.

Databases for Students

·         Students develop a survey in small groups or as a class to distribute to the school population or members of the community.  Compile survey results in a database and use queries to analyze results.

·         Collect student research results on a common topic and report the results:

  • the nine planets
  • the US presidents
  • countries
  • insects
  • mathematicians
  • literary characters
  • diseases
  • careers
  • composers
  • nutrition facts
  • ancient cultures
  • current events

  • Collect data from a scientific experiment.  Analyze the data using queries or export the data to an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Students enter information about books they have read.  Students can view what other students have read and search the database to help them select a new book to read.
