22nd Annual Black Leadership Symposium Empowering
Youth: Implementing Diversity
Students from JCHS enjoyed an empowering
workshop in Lawrence, KS on Thursday,
October 18th, 2007. This conference
provided them with detailed instructions and
advice on how to get to college, what scholarships are
available to them, and what to expect when they enter their
freshman year. The program entitled the "22nd Annual
Black Leadership Symposium Empowering Youth: Implementing
Diversity" showcased Kansas University’s diversity programs
and conferred useful and relevant presentations for black
students. The featured speaker Erica “RhapsodE” Hawthorne is
a writer/artist and a graduate of KU. She is well
known for fusing poetry, singing, rhythm and
emotion-filled words sometimes set to music. Erica

empowered the students with suggestions that will make their
college experience a positive one.
