In this week’s Superintendent Weekly Update, Dr. Reginald Eggleston discusses the first week of school, orientations, the new Junction City High School, and more!

As Geary County Schools USD 475 students return to their classrooms for the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, the district’s cleaning service provider, ABM, is taking extra steps to ensure they are providing the safest learning environment for the staff and students.

Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday, Aug. 2, to extend the current Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston’s contract with the district to three years, the maximum length allowed by Kansas statute.

Geary County Schools USD 475’s Board of Education made the decision on Monday to update the district’s COVID-19 Mitigation Plan to require all staff, students, and visitors to wear masks, regardless of their vaccination status, inside all district facilities and district vehicles, including school buses.

The 2020-2021 school year was a year unlike any other, consumed with many unknowns, emotions, and changes. However, Geary County Schools USD 475 has powered through the pandemic with remarkable resilience, keeping its doors open throughout the entirety of the school year. In doing so, the district’s students and staff received multiple awards and recognition for their efforts, dedication, and commitment.

Following recent market conditions in favor of refinancing goals set by the Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education, as provided to district staff by Piper Sandler, the district acted on Tuesday to refinance and lock in new rates for the new Junction City High School bond debt. These new rates will result in an interest savings of $10.9 million.

The negotiations team met on July 21st via Zoom at 1:00 p.m. The topic of discussion was compensation. The team was able to resolve all issues and reach a tentative agreement.

Following approval of a phased opening plan by the City of Junction City, Geary County Schools USD 475 made the difficult decision on Friday to postpone the opening tours of the new Junction City High School.

Construction of the new high school continues to press towards timely completion to support its opening for the fall semester. High school classes are now planned to commence on August 25th. All other schools will commence classes as previously scheduled. Read more

After much consideration, Geary County Schools USD 475’s administrative team has decided to make the wearing of masks optional for students and staff during the 2021-2022 school year.

Geary County Schools USD 475 is thankful for each and every one of the 32 retirees for the 2020-2021 school year, their time with the district and dedication to the students’ growth.
