Seitz Teacher Is Horizon Award Recipient

Each fall, USD 475 selects outstanding teachers within the district to be honored for their efforts in educating the students in our community.  The first award the district presents each fall is the Horizon Award.

The Horizon Award recognizes a teacher that has completed his or her first year of teaching and has shown him or herself to be an outstanding educator.  Principals throughout the district nominate a second-year teacher in their building to be recognized.  The Teaching and Learning staff then review the nominees and select the one they feel is the most exceptional.

This year, USD 475 is honoring Ann Biram, first grade teacher at Seitz Elementary, as our district’s Horizon Award winner.  Anne taught fourth grade during her first year at Seitz, and this year she has moved to teaching first grade students.

Jodi Testa, Principal at Seitz Elementary, ensured that Mrs. Biram received a nomination from her this year.  Jodi says that Mrs. Biram is very approachable, develops great relationships with her students, and establishes a structured system in her classroom that makes for a consistent learning environment for the students.  Jodi also adds that Mrs. Biram is a natural leader for both students and adults, and that she is inspired by her devotion to educating the young people in our community.

These qualities are evident when observing Mrs. Biram’s interactions with her students.  Her students are engaged and attentive, and Mrs. Biram keeps her students focused on the lessons she teaches.  She seems very comfortable in the classroom and takes a soft approach to her young pupils.

Mrs. Biram says that her biggest challenge since becoming a teacher has been adjusting to a new place.  She is not a Kansas native, so much of her time outside of the classroom is spent getting to know the Kansas standards and getting used to life in a new place.  She is still working on finding her footing outside of the classroom, but she loves the opportunities that her new career and her new home have provided her.

Superintendent Eggleston and the Geary County Board of Education will be presenting Mrs. Biram with her award at the regular Board of Education meeting, scheduled for November 2, 2020 at 6:30 pm, in the Board Room at the Mary E. Devin Center for Education.
