The JC Breakfast Optimist Club is a group of citizens that gets together every month to find ways to support the community in Junction City. Their mission is: “To provide hope and positive vision through the members of the club by bringing out the best in our youth, our members, and our community.”
One of the ways they accomplish this mission is to reward students within USD 475 for their positivity, leadership skills, and enthusiasm for helping others. One such reward is to recognize a Student of the Month.
Each month, counselors at JCHS help to nominate students within the school that show these qualities, and more. Then, the group has a special committee that meets and reviews the nominations, ultimately choosing one student to be honored for the month. The Optimists partner with local businesses and organizations to ensure the students receives awards for the recognition.
The JC Breakfast Optimist Club recognized Kylie Yaussi, sophomore at JCHS, as January’s Student of the Month. Kylie received a certificate from the Optimists, a movie pass to B&B Theater, and a gift certificate from JC BBQ/Grill.
The Optimists also honored another student in January with a scholarship to a youth leadership program. Kansas State University hosts the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Camp, each summer. The Optimists ensured that Akasha Schlict, another sophomore from JCHS, will get to attend this summer, as they presented her with a scholarship to attend the camp.
The JC Breakfast Optimist Club is able to support these students through various business partnerships and community fundraisers. If you are interested in supporting the Optimists, or learning more about their mission, their next fundraising event will be at JC BBQ/Grill on February 12th, from open to close. 10% of the sales will go to supporting 16 different youth organizations within Geary County.
