BLAST Bicycle Learning and Safety Program coming to USD 475

BLAST Bicycle Learning and Safety Program

In an effort to promote safe and active transportation within the community, USD 475 has adopted the BLAST (Bicycle Learning and Safety Training) Program.  The BLAST program consists of approximately 3 hours of classroom instruction on bicycle riding and safety for students. This will include training from Physical Education & BLAST trained support staff, safety checks related to the bike and rider, practice of riding skills (where students operate a bike in a controlled environment), and learning how to bike in traffic.

The bike fleet, trailer, and the BLAST curriculum were purchased with the BCBS Pathway grant funds and includes training for the BLAST instructors on February 17th.  After the training, the bike fleet will start at JCHS then move to both middle schools, and then hopefully an elementary on Fort Riley and Junction City.

If you are interested in volunteering to be a trainer or have questions related to the bike training, please contact Joe Handlos at josephhandlos@usd475.org.
